Not long after I started posting comments on this site last fall, I made an offhand remark about how our music collection was looted from the house after it caught fire at the end of 2005. It was not intended to be any kind of solicitation, but a lot of you picked up the ball and ran with it. Since then I have been graced with numerous gifts of music from a host of great people-Arbuthnot, cush, JodyC, direwolf, and one man in particular who has made a habit of sharing his generosity, AshesRising. And if I've forgotten to list anyone else, please accept my apologies and mark it up to my pea-sized brain failing to perform simple functions like remembering things (even now, I recall Dancinbears making the attempt to send something, but it got lost in transit---it's the thought that counts, though). But while my brain might be small, my appreciation is anything but.

And today, I received something from one of our our friends in Maine, Mr. mudcatbluez, a box of blues so big that the only thing that could possibly be larger would be the size of these people's hearts. It brings my belief back to the surface that at the core of this Forum is a spirit of love, brotherhood (not meant as a gender-exclusive term, either), and charity, exemplary of so much of the message found in The Grateful Dead's music itself. The old House of Blues motto comes to mind, as well: "Help Ever, Hurt Never."

Have I said things here at any time that have been hurtful, not helpful? There is little doubt that I have, and I am not proud of it, either. I'd love to take back anything that has wounded, but once it's out there, it's kind of hard to erase it. But I do wish to offer a small bit of supplication in the hope that I can express respect for the feelings of ALL who share of themselves here. And I thank you for the friendship you have bestowed upon me.

God will surely bless each of you with love and kinship.

I'm glad you dug it, Bryan. It was most definitely my pleasure.

Besides, wasn't it Voltaire who said, "A day without music smokes a pickle..."?

Or was that Tennyson?

Peace.

I always though that was Edmund "Don't Call Me Faerie OR Queen" Spenser. But if it's poetry you want, I think there might be no better way to express life's delicate beauty than this piece, remembered as the finest literary achievement by the winner of the Pimp Of The Year Contest, from the film I'm Gonna Get You, Sucka, who can possibly forget the work of Flyguy?: My bitch better have my money Through rain, sleet, or snow My whore better have my money Not half, not some, but all my cash 'Cause if she don't, I'm gonna put my foot dead in her ass.

Lyrics as Poetry? I must put forth the following as what has to be one of the most touching examples of how mere words can open a window into the very soul:

Working on a sex farm
Trying to raise some hard love
Getting out my pitch fork
Poking your hay

Scratching in your henhouse
Sniffing at your feedbag
Slipping out your back door
Leaving my spray

Sex farm woman, I'm gonna mow you down
Sex farm woman, I'll rake and hoe you down
Sex farm woman, don't you see my silo rising high?

Working on a sex farm
Hosing down your barn door
Bothering you livestock
They know what I need

Working up a hot sweat
Crouching in your pea patch
Plowing through your beanfield
Planting my seed

Sex farm woman, I'll be your hired hand
Sex farm woman, I'll let my offer stand
Sex farm woman, don't you hear my tractor rumbling by?

Working on a sex farm
Trying to raise some hard love
Getting out my pitch fork
Poking your hay

Sends shivers up your spine, doesn't it?

Hey, Bryan, all kidding aside, your post really hits the nail on the "Head" about what I love most about having caught a ride on the bus. The music is fantastic and serves to bind us, but it is the people who make it what it is: a true family of folks who more often than not will not hesitate to help out another or offer encouragement and support in all things. And just like a real family, there are the occasional spats and disagreements, but that is only natural. At the core of it all is the music that has been left to us to treasure and share with any and all who may have the inner-ear that can truly hear what the music is saying. This is why the recent melee has not bothered me too much as it is just part of the natural course of things. Stories like yours serve to remind me, and hopefully others, of why we are here and why we should look at each other as brothers and sisters. We have been given a special gift that has brought together some of the most generous and caring people I've come across in my many years, be it in parking lots, late night coffee stops at Denny's, waiting in line at the box office, holding cells (don't ask) or even just pulling up next to a car with a sweet Uncle John's Band coming from an open window and a nod and smile is exchanged with the driver.
Basically this place rocks and you folks are awesome. Crank the tunes and keep an eye out for a brother in need.

And did I say "People" stopping strangers? "Strangers" does sound much better, doesn't it? This is what happens when I multi-task.

Among Dead Heads, it really is about that deeply shared connection you have with others that you might not actually know, so to speak, but you at least have some idea of where they're coming from, somewhere you know you've been, as well. People stopping strangers just to shake their hand Here's another beautiful ballad, one that I actually found in the collection I received yesterday, a poem composed by Memphis Slim, but I was especially excited to be reunited with Elvin Bishop's stirring rendition: Now I walked into a beer tavern To give a girl a nice time When I entered I had forty-five dollars When I left I had one dime Wasn't that a beer drinkin' woman Don't you know, man don't you know She was a beer drinkin' woman I don't want to see her no more Now when I spent down to my last dime She says, "Daddy I know you're not through" I told her, "Yes, baby doll and the diploma belongs to you" She would often say, "Excuse me a minute, I've got to step around here" And every time she'd come back She'd say, "I want another quart of beer" Wasn't that a beer drinkin' woman Don't you know, man don't you know She was a beer drinkin' woman And I don't want to see her no more I'm sorry, but that one overwhelms me with emotion. I need to find a tissue.

Like I told mudcat, don't be apologizing about anything of the sort. For one thing, you just don't owe me one, and for another, good things come to those who wait.
